There are two parallel ranges of mountains or Cordilleras in Ecuador, both connected and traversed by immense ridges, forming the Ecuadorian Highlands or commonly known as “Páramo” or Sierra. In the Northern Páramo, there are ten snow capped volcanic summits over 5000 mt. each majestically showing its own personality and profile . In the Southern Páramo, the mountains are older but lower, compiling a dramatic topography of bare sculpted peaks and deep valleys.

The two main Cordilleras are the Western and the Eastern Ranges, inside them spread and lies several evergreen valleys. These inter Andean valleys and shelter a dense indigenous population, which main activity is agriculture, Lot of fruits, vegetables, grains, are produced. A wilder vegetation and scenery is to be found on the outer slopes of the Andes which are shrouded in the mists that rise from the tropical lowlands, forming the immense cloud forest.
